April 2018
Terry Africa is one of the most exciting new artists on the local music scene with his fusion of urban contemporary sounds that bend genres without skipping a  beat. He managed to penetrate the market on the back of huge singles featuring high profile features from Tocky Vibes, Pa Chihera to Mr Putiti. For his debut EP The Sugar Boy EP Terry was out to prove he is just as good at making good music solo as he is when dropping duets.

The first single of the Sugar Boy EP to get visuals is the motivational Muchinda which sees Terry and a band belt out advice via an impromptu gig knee deep in the ghetto to a certain man (muchinda) whose tribulations are also visualized in the background. All of us can be this Muchinda and Terry reminds us that come what may there surely is a Divine power at play and whatever we may face pales in comparison to the blessings coming our way.
Ladies and men who are gentle Mbare's very own Chairman Killer T has come through with a video for ndamuda off the critically acclaimed Zimdancehall masterpiece thats Mashoko Anopfuura. The crisp visuals which pay homage to Zimbabwe's beautiful outdoors mirror the songs storyline of boy meets girl, girl feigns disinterest, finally agrees but boy's mum proves rather difficult and won't accept her son's choice.

Sometime back Tambisa Dako hitmaker Tricky J hinted at a collaboration with raunchy Zimdancehall star Lady Bee and he has made good of that promise with Get Set.Get set is a Dancehall/HipHop fusion for party people and the Sim Doc shot visuals don't lack in that department featuring an assortment of party scenes filled with ladies who happen to have bright futures behind them.In typical rapperdude fashion Tricky had promised us a game changing video which is supposed to be one of the greatest ever out of Zimbabwe, did he deliver on his promise or nah?

So the other day i was scrolling down my timeline when an interesting tweet caught my eye.Tehn Diamond had been in studio with H3nry and Asaph and a fire joint was reportedly on the way. While peeps who follow ZimHipHop might be familiar with Asaph and Tehn i doubt many know what an actual beast H3nry is hence this write up with arguably two of his best videos to introduce Zimbabwe to the homey.

On Marry Jane H3nry equates weed to a pretty lady and proceeds to detail his love for her while describing their journey together from how he met her, the memorable moments shared up until this point where they can't be separated.

Manasseh is classic H3nry featuring profound lyrics,a hard hitting instrumental and a few controversial bars about his personal worth when compared to Africa's elite. The visual follows the song's biblical hue as H3nry thanks the lord for victory at the expense of haters.

For those of us who grew up during the peak of the Urban Grooves era new music from Maskiri is always welcome. Tateguru as Maskiri is affectionately known to his legions of fans has dropped the 3rd single from his 2018 offering Serious Business and it doesn't stray far  from the Maskiri of old.

Titled Bantu  the song looks at the duality of humanity i.e for every person who hates on you and your grind there is bound to be another who equally loves and supports that same grind. The many quotables & witty one liners are delivered in Maskiri's signature choppy flow and there is enough lines with shock value to keep things spicy. Are ya'll feeling the song or nah?
Lee Zim formerly Lee McHoney is a relatively new artist with just under a year in the music industry but she carries herself like a superstar. We first met her when she added her sultry vocals to Represent Beatz's No Stress banger alongside Asaph and Jay Dumza.

In Help Me Understand she proves she can ride solo delivering a potential anthem for the heart broken souls who don't get why they are always regarded as second options by their number ones. Production was handled by Represent Beats and the beautiful video was directed by Blaq Inq Creates.
Grandma's favorite Mariachi has delivered visuals to his 2018 single Ngaanake which has been doing insane numbers on the Star FM chart show. The song features Fun F and will be featured on the Mariachi ne Muzukuru album which is yet to get an official release date. Ngaanake is an uptempo party joint dedicated to fly ladies who light up dancefloors and the video follows in this mould featuring Mariachi, Fun F, their friends partying in the sun.

Urban Grooves legend Leonard Mapfumo has managed to stay relevant years after he broke onto the music scene by staying true to himself, nurturing new talent and churning out good music time and again.Earlier this year he introduced us to Mapfumo's Thursday Live Sessions a platform on which he perfoms yesteryear hits and new music Unplugged with a live band. For episode five he recruited another urban grooves veteran Trevor Dongo and the two perfomed their smash Two Chete besides talking about their new single featuring Yoz which will drop soon with a video.

Gifted voice of the youth aka Prince Pinn  Asaph had a couple of uncomfortable truths he wanted to share and he had to do it in rhyme. The song is straight up bars on the Hate to say it instrumental and it was visualized by Corey.

Asaph touches on everything from rappers who prioritize beef instead of educating a city that only gets along when sharing drugs to the recent political developments in the country and what they mean to him as an artist. He reflects on getting love from "Ekasi" but never scooping awards from those parts because he is Tafadzwa not Thabani. He also touches on where he is at in his career, trusting God's timing & staying away from unnecessary tiffs though he could bury a whole album of the need arises.
Somebody Had To Do It might be the title of Takura's debut album but it also embodies his state of mind and desire to do everything possible to achieve everything he and his generation dream of. Ahead of the release of the project slated for Long Cheng with a guest list that includes Jnr Brown and Dj Towers Takura has released a documentary meant to tell his story.

The doccie features cameos by creative collaborators Jnr Brown and Andy Cutta who tell the story of a young man destined for great things based on his work ethic and talent alone. Takura himself talks of his humble begginings, the grind and his plans for world domination.Lofty ambitions indeed but Somebody really had to Do It.
The visuals for Gemma Griffiths 's My Town which were shot in Capetown and London are here ladies and men who are gentle. My town is the title track off Gemma' s debut EP and it doesn't stray away from her signature sound which she describes as acoustic soul.Sombre guitar strings and piano rolls meet her melodious voice as she tells a lover who did her wrong to stay out of her "Town" which we interpreted as her personal space, heart etc etc.

Gemma is a white Zimbabwean female artist who first caught our eyes when she did her own renditions of popular Zimbabwean songs like Winky D 's Musarova Bigiman and Jah Prayzah' s mdhara vachauya giving them a female perspective and soulful feel.

Kwekwetown femcee Phreshy and Rusape record producer/rapper Splits Loui decided to team up for this smooth yet tumultuous joint about the results of miscommunication in a relationship.  Splits feels like he is giving his all in the relationship going as far as introducing  Phreshy to his niggaz, the same Phreshy who won't do the same. Phreshy begs to differ saying she is all for the lovey dovey stuff but she is keeping her distance because Splits initially made it clear he wants to take things slow.Apparently all they need is for the other party to show and prove that indeed they are in love

On one hand we have a socialite/social commentator who sharpened his wordsmith skills on the Freestyle circuit while on the other we have a talented gospel artist impacting the young and old through dancehall. Add a catchy Jeeperz beat to that matrix plus a message of grace coupled with God's love and the congregation can only say Amen with a gravity defying Runit jump or is that a Noble dab for good measure.Ladies and men who are gentle Tazviona

Close friends and frequent collaborators Sway and Boi Mac have new heat out produced by Tkay. The trappy single is what the Cool Kids call wavy what with the banging beat and Atlantasque cadence. The subject matter is getting your guala by any means necessary like a Gweja (thats street talk for hustler made popular by alluvial diamond panners). A video for the song is reportedly in the works with a late April release date.

Ever since his debut  performance on this year's edition of The Voice UK Donel Mangena has gained a legion of fans who tune in every Saturday to watch him kill the stage. The England based teen who is of Zimbabwean descent has impressed everyone from coach Wil.i.am to other coaches on the show who include Olly Murs and Jennifer Hudson with each performance.

Last night he performed Pharell 's hit Happy which he flavoured with a bit of Ndebele to gain a spot in the finals. As usual his father and grandmother (who flew all the way from Bulawayo when the competition started) were in attendance to support the gifted vocalist who got a standing ovation from the audience.
